| There is nothing I can say is bad about
Alresford Golf Course, it was raining the day tee1up played
it but then the
course was in superb condition greens were super fast and
holding. I have also been lucky enough to play it with
Romsey GC in a friendly my playing partner on that
day was Andy Clark and I can remember how much he like the
course then. Needless to say he enjoyed even more the day
we played for the St Cross Cup scoring a bandit score
of 41 points in the Stableford competition in the
afternoon. Second place went to Andy Webber with a
respectable 36 points and third to Gavin Hall on 34
points.

Alresford is a parkland course set off the A31 near
Winchester a little difficult to find as you have to go more
or less in to Alresford and its no sign posted and don't use
RAC route map as it got me lost the first time I went there.
On paper its not the hardest course in the area but the
greens and the sculptured fairways make it a real test and
there are plenty of trees to get you into trouble. The first
hole is a fairly shot par four which dog legs left and is
down hill to the green easily missed with too much club.
This followed by the first of five par threes which is a
long one over a small valley you'll need a four iron at
least. Hole three is a straight par four and all you need is
a straight drive to give a chance of hitting the green in
two which is surrounded on both sides by a copse. You will
arrive at the fourth after a short walk through some trees
its a fairly short hole protected on the left by two large
bunkers and your shot into the green is blind. The fifth a
long par four needs to well placed shots the second of which
will be quite long but the green is fairly open apart from a
bunker on the left. Hole six a lovely par three doesn't look
that hard from the tee but once on the green you will be
putting over many contours. The seventh is a par five with a
tight tee shot once past this your next two will be fairly
easy but again the green slopes from back to front with
plenty of contours in it. The eighth a short iron of the tee
will leave you a wedge up to the raised green watch out for
the bunker hidden on the left. The ninth hole is confusing
only because we managed to play the eighteenth instead only
realising our error when we saw the team in front of us
playing a different green all I will say is don't walk of
the eight and go to the first tee you see walk past it on
the right and head right even more. Anyway the ninth is a
short par four with trees both sides and a raised green I
think it had a tier in it but cant be sure as I was so angry
at missing the tee. Hole ten is a very short par three in to
s small copse. The eleventh is a difficult par four there is
a small tree right in the middle of the fairway and trees to
the left and right then when you have past all this the
green is on top of a hill. Hole twelve is another hard par
four tight off the tee and dog leg left and another long
shot awaits you to a two tiered green. The thirteenth is a
par three all up hill club choice is everything on this
hole. The next two fourteen and fifth teen are very short
par fours you play around a copse of trees in the middle of
the two holes and although short the tee shots need thinking
about and watch out for the hidden bunkers. The sixteenth a
par three has very difficult green it slopes from back to
front putting anywhere on this green will leave you thinking
about saving a four and not getting your par. The
seventeenth a par five and one of the nicest holes I have
played in a long while it has a sharp dog right down a hill
to a valley after a fairly short straight tee shot then it
snakes to the left up hill to the green. The eighteenth tee
shot need to be straight and be as close to the trees on the
left as you can get it as the fairway slopes to the right
and thing right and you will find yourself in amongst the
trees on the right and then the green has a tier in it to
make the putting difficult.
