Barnham Broom
- Last played by tee1up June 2006 great venue for a golf
weekend break but let down by poor service tee1up rating 7/10
- Barnham Broom is a great golfing venue for any society it has to
two very good 18 holes courses The Valley and The Hill, The Valley
being the best test of golf. The rooms and the facilities which
included a swimming pool and sauna are second to none in the area
but unfortunately the service in the restaurant was extremely poor
when we visited.
-
- The Valley course opens with a fairly easy par five as long as
your tee shot is well placed around the corner on the left. The
next hole needs a little more thought off the tee as the hole dog
legs hard left over a large pond in front of the green, the hole
itself is very short par for but placement of your first shot is
everything if you land on the right hand side of the fairway you
could be faced with anything from a seven iron upwards to a green
that is starts immediately after the pond. The third hole a long
par four you will need a long straight tee shot to give a chance
of hitting the green or getting past the river that runs
diagonally across the fairway. The green is contoured and drops
from back to front making a very good test of your putting skills.
Hole four the first of the par threes is very tricky the green is
elevated and tiered the hole looks closer than on the card but you
will need one extra club than you think to get you there if you
walk away with a par you will be lucky. The fifth hole from a
elevated tee is a lovely hole best line is just right of the large
oak if you managed to pass the branches the ball will release
right the fairway. Hole six needs a lot of thought a medium iron
is all you should need to bring you up to the ridge try keep to
the right hand side as there is a pond and loads of trouble on the
left also you will be blocked out from seeing the green on that
side, the green is tucked away beside a hill with a trees to the
left from you second shot the entrance is very tight. The seventh
hole is superb I personally like par three with elevated tees
especially if the are above the tree line. This hole is no
exception you can just about see the front of the green from the
front edge of the tee but what you cant see is the lake just at
the back of the green catching any over hit balls. The eighth
takes you back towards the club it’s a long par five the tee
shot is met by a series of bunkers on the right of the fairway if
you keep away form these you will have every chance of making par
or better. Hole nine has a very tight tee shot and you will need
to hit it far enough and on the right hand side to have any chance
of hitting the green, there is also water down the left to put you
off you second shot. The tenth is a lovely hole you cant see the
end of the fairway as it disappears around
trees on the right anything off line or too long finds
trouble also just around the corner is the river straight across
the fairway. It will take too more shorts to reach a difficult
green with plenty of contours. Hole ten back towards the club
again needs a good club selection as you can over hit and find the
river again in the middle of the fairway. The green is very fast
and bowl shaped with a slope from back to front. Hole eleven is
very misleading from the tee all you need is a five iron as the
green is only about a nine iron from the river that runs straight
across the hole, it is possible hit a driver off the tee and get
over the river but the green is elevated any thing short runs
straight back at you. The twelve from a elevated tee looks light a
fairly easy tee shot but there is a large tree just left of centre
which is just were you need your ball to be to let it run down the
fairway. Hole thirteen a par four dog leg you will need you tee
shot on the right hand side to have a good shot into a tight
green. Fifteen is a very short par three which is protected by a
bunch of trees on the right. Your drive on the sixteenth if kept
to the left side of the fairway and is long enough will find
itself either on or very close to the green. After a fairly long
walk back up the hill the seventeenth tee over looks the river
again which runs right in front of the par three green, this hole
plays longer than the yardage anything short is trouble. The last
hole takes you along side the holiday flats the tee shot is
protected with out of bounds on the left but as long as you have a
straight shot youll have a chance of hitting the tight green which
has a very tight entrance.
