Captains Report 2005 -2006 Neil Weaver

A CAPTAINS YEAR – 2005

Before I bore you all with how my year has gone, I have one or two thank you’s to pass on.  First of all to the two Andy’s, Andy Clark and Andy Webber, for their support behind the scene and on the day of the Tee-1-Up events.  Without their support the scorecards wouldn’t have been ready, the scores wouldn’t have been calculated, the prizes bought and provided and, some would say the worst of all, the fines wouldn’t have been collected!  So a big thanks goes to them.

My next thank-you goes to Alan Garvey for being my Vice Captain this year.  I trust that you will give him the support and help he needs during his forthcoming year wearing the Captain’s armband.

My thanks go to you the members, for your support and attendance at all the events held this year.  It goes with saying that without your support  the Society wouldn’t be as successful as it is.  So many thanks to you.

My final thank-you goes to Kevin.  Not just from me but from all of us who have attended all of the excellent Tee-1-Up events held during my Captain’s year; from the weekend in Cornwall through to my final official event at Littlehampton.  If it wasn’t for his enthusiasm, his dedication and his all-round excellent organisational skills we wouldn’t have had the successful events we have had both this year and in the past.  I look to you all to provide both Alan, as your new Captain and Kevin your continued support to ensure that the society continues to grow and be successful.

Now for my year…...where do I start....as someone once said, at the beginning!!!

It all started in Cornwall.  Whether it was a drunken discussion (and we have had many of those during the weekends away) or whether it was planned, I was nominated as the inaugural Captain of the Tee-1-Up society.  Whilst this came as a bit of a shock – I would have argued that there were better placed and more experienced Tee-1-Up members to take this role on – I was never the less very proud to take on this responsibility.  The only question of course is what does a Captain do.  Having spoken to my Dad, who has been Captain at more courses than I can remember, the key aspects include support, enthusiasm and attendance.  I leave it to you to decide whether I have achieved these or not.

My year included a variety of courses from Dummer (my first Captains event) on a hot July day to Romsey in chilly November, with 2005 ending on a very cold trip to Tidworth Garrison.  2006 included Test Valley and a personal favourite of mine Littlehampton.  All in all, the Tee-1-Up aim to visit a variety of courses was maintained and will, not doubt, continue in the forthcoming year.

So my year ended with a successful weekend in Norwich.  Again this was a great weekend, which included the inaugural (Ryder Cup) style club competition.  I think you will all agree that this was a fantastic competition, aided by fantastic weather and brilliant company.  And of course it also helped that Team Weaver won!

And finally a big thanks goes to Gavin Hall.  Without his expert driving I wouldn’t have been able to complete my Captain duties – not so sure about the golf mind you.  My thanks goes to him for driving to each event and always getting us there on time………………well almost; so much for sat nav when we attended the Test Valley – a top tip for you; don’t switch the voice off!!!!!

Many thanks to you all, and may you enjoy a year of happy golfing.          Neil Weaver
