- The expectation of playing this was great in June last year
Trevose as it had always been high on my list courses I wanted
to play in Cornwall and being a links style course this made
even more exciting. The course was designed by Harry Colt the
same man responsible for Muirfield, Lytham ST Anne’s, Pine
Valley, Wentworth and Sunningdale; it lies at Trevose head near
St Merryn on the road out of Padstow. We had booked to play the
nine-hole course in the morning, which you need to drive to from
the golf club. You park in an open field between the eighteenth
and the first just by the teeing ground and on first reflection
it doesn’t look up to much of a course, but give it a chance
as there as some really nice holes with fantastic views to the
beach.
- By the time we got back to clubhouse the place was full of
expectant players and others sitting on the walls of the
courtyard drinking pints. We had booked buggies for the
afternoons round and I can honestly say that I was glad of it
after the round even though I always prefer to walk courses. The
first tee is adjacent to the car park and with our 2pm teeing
slot we had built up quite an audience mainly due to the strict
timings and the way the club had pack the tee times. The opening
hole is an easy par four with the green obscured by a large
grass mound on the right. The second is a lovely driving hole
from an elevated tee. The third is a difficult par three over a
valley to a green on to off the hill the other side but watch
out for the bunker on the right, as the wind will drag you into
it. The fourth a par five is very testing keep your drive off
the tee to right of middle as thee is a bunker on the left next
shot if you have a good fairway wood in your bag should get you
over the hill right across the fairway mind you the wind will be
right in your face from the beech. Number five is a dogleg par
four this hole has no bunkers but the green is raised. Hole six
is a short par for only about 320 yards two bunkers are on your
left but shouldn’t come into play and the green is protected
at the front by bunkers on each side. The seventh another par
four with a bunker on the right your second should be a mid iron
into a tiered green with bunkers on both sides. The eighth a par
three about 150 yards but is into the wind and takes one club
extra. The ninth takes you back towards the clubhouse and is a
par four there is a series of mounds right across you fairway
and the green is raised at the front but no bunkers around it.
The back nine starts with a lovely par four with a river (ditch)
running right across the fairway and down the right back towards
the tee it doesn’t come into play with your drive. The green
is tiered unusually from left to right and is also very narrow.
Hole eleven is a long par three to a raised tiered green and
bunkers both sides. The twelve a dogleg par four with a
undulating fairway keep to the right as there are a couple of
bunkers on the left and if you hit your next short of the green
you will find yourself in a pot bunker dead centre of the
fairway. Hole thirteen is a straightforward par five. Your
second shot just over the rise in the fairway could be caught by
the bunker in the middle of the fairway, which is 50 yards short
of a green and defended on both sides by bunkers. The fourteenth
makes you think about your club selection of the tee as there
are a series of bunkers right across the fairway around 250
yards, if you manage to stay out of these your next is simple.
Hole fifteen a short par four with bunkers on either side of the
green. The last three holes on this course are very tough
starting with the sixteenth a par three with bunkers between the
green and on the right side its also 200 yards long and straight
back into the wind off Constantine Bay. The seventeenth is a
lovely par four keep to the left of the fairway and just before
the rise in the fairway your next is all carry over a river
(ditch) in front of the green. Hole eighteen is only 416 yards
long but you will be on the tee thinking it is a par five. Your
tee shot should is straight forward and your next is very long
fairway wood over the road to a raised green if you miss hit or
like me didn’t have the power to make it two there are a
couple of bunkers on the right to make it even harder.
